At Bill Cattey's request, I am letting you know about a set of
scripts I've developed to facilitate installing Athena 8.3 on a
PC that already has Red Hat Linux 6.1 installed. I've adapted
the standard installer script by eliminating some of its automated
choices and putting in a few other bits. Since AFS is not normally
available after a vanilla Red Hat install, I worked around that by
using Samba shares on an Athena Sun to provide access to the files.
I don't guarantee that these scripts are bulletproof, but I have used
them on a number of machines with good results. I have written up
extensive installation notes to guide potential users through the
process. My goal was to make the resulting machine look as much
as possible as if it had been configured using the fully automatic
installer, while supporting a wider range of hardware and dual-boot
configurations.
I hope some of my work will prove useful to you in providing the Linux
Athena port to a broader audience. I personally am delighted with
the port so far. We've found that Linux-Athena gives a whole new
life to 100 MHz Pentiums (we have a bunch of these, I'm afraid) that
would otherwise be relegated to technology's trash bin. You'd be
amazed at how well these boxes run Athena, especially given what dogs
they were at running Windows.
All the files named below live in the "crldev" locker.
