I have been in contact with SGI about hardware upgrade of the R5000 CPU
chip. The Branch Service manager will be in touch with me Monday or
Tuesday with pricing and availability. If we had support for the
hardware directly with SGI, it would be a free upgrade. I took the
unusual step of getting hold of the person at Polaris who handles the
MIT contract and briefed her on the situation. She too promises to get
back to me
on Monday with more information on pricing and availability of hardware
upgrades.

I have been in contact with Transarc and indirectly with SGI software
personnel. Transarc says they will begin working with our SGI friends
on Monday. Through Bob Basch, I have heard that our SGI friends
currently feel confident that a software patch can be crafted in time
for our summer deployment. SGI is focusing on crafting a clean fix
in cooperation with Transarc rather than on doing an SGI-only kludge
to get IRIX 6.5.7 working for MIT. Bob and I will be monitoring this
process to make sure it is going to succeed in our timeframe.

I expect to know more by the middle of next week.
