As per my action item at the Athena Owls meeting, I have contacted
Transarc. Mindy Szczblewski has agreed to talk to the AFS engineers,
let them know that Jason Uhlenkott and Steve Champion of SGI are
ready willing and able to assist with fixing what stands in the way of
getting AFS 3.6 certified for IRIX 6.5.7.
I will also be contacting Christine Muramatsu of SGI to investigate
the availability and pricing for 88 CPU chip upgrades.
I chatted with Bob Basch about the various alternatives. He pointed out
that since IRIX 6.5.3 is not specifically mentioned, we are already
running
on a platform that is not officially blessed by Transarc, so Freezing systems
at Athena 8.3 with IRIX 6.5.4 would be unhelpful here.
So we are trying to find the minimum cost way to solve two problems:
1. We are unable to run the IRIX 6.5.7-based release on 88 machines
at all.
2. We are not running an officially supported AFS platform.
We prefer not to redo all the Athena work we did for IRIX 6.5.4, but that
is a possibility. Knowing as quickly as possible if we can get neither
software nor hardware fixes is important. It will tell us to us going
on the 6.5.4 work sooner.
