I believe I have a working Linux alpha release, with some caveats:

	* There are no Linux alpha machines right now.

	* The RPMs are all compiled against Red Hat 6.1. Mostly this
doesn't matter, but rpmupdate in particular won't operate
under 6.2 (librpm had incompatible changes), so you'll have
to manually update the athena-ws package once I modify and
	  rebuild it for 6.2.

	* There is no kernel update. Red Hat's kernel packages do not
take care of lilo.conf (the Red Hat update program does), so
we have to. Writing that code will take a little time. So
we're using the kernel package from Red Hat 6.1.

	* The package list is missing a couple of things, notably
xmms, because of dependency problems which will take a
	  little working out.

You can try updating with the following commands:

	# Omit the first command if you have a /var/athena/release-rpms
	cp /afs/dev.mit.edu/system/rhlinux/control/list-8.3.30 /var/athena/release-rpms
	rpm -U /afs/dev.mit.edu/system/rhlinux/athena-8.4-alpha/free/RPMS/athena-ws-8.4-0.i386.rpm
	update_ws 8.4

	# CHECK at this point if you still have /etc/athena/rc.conf
	# and that it makes sense. If not, move
	# /etc/athena/rc.conf.rpmsave into its place. I believe I've
	# fixed this problem, but it was a last-minute fix
	# propagation.

	reboot

Be extra cautious about doing this on a machine you aren't willing to
reinstall, and don't expect those update instructions to work forever.
(I'm going to work on back-propagating rpmupdate into 8.3 shortly.)
