1. Solaris alpha release

We have an alpha release. The update sytem still needs some work.

We need a verification program to replace tracking the OS. miki will
get to this in a couple of weeks.

Garry encountered a disturbing problem with the update involving some
missing files; see testers [4337] and following transactions.

2. IRIX alpha release

We have an alpha release. Some fixes need to be propagated relating
to the xlogin system.

IRIX 6.5.7 doesn't seem to run with AFS on the older R5000 Indys, due
to a processor flaw. We could update the processors, but the number
of machines which would need to be updated is kind of large. rbasch
and wdc are still working on this issue. IRIX 6.5.7 does appear to
hang much less often on 300MHz O2s, so we would really like to be able
to run it.

3. General alpha release problems

We don't have a dead files cleanup yet, which is masking some
problems.

The dash app-defaults were pointing to the wrong place; we have a fix
for that.

4. Linux status

We don't have an alpha release. It's gating on rc.conf and some
xlogin system problems.

Thomas ran into some problems with verification. We decided that he
can punt (for now) on getting rid of added files, since we don't deal
with that on other platforms. Making sure the RPM verification
database is in sync with the AFS is still tricky, and will require
some investigation.

There was some dispute over how cookie-cutter we should make the
instructions on how to install the layered Linux-Athena release. Greg
and Thomas think that if we make the instructions too explicit
(i.e. giving exact commands to run instead of just saying "here is
where the RPMs are"), then we are setting an immediate precedent for
supporting people's administration of their Red Hat systems. Bill
took a contrary view. Oliver has concerns that consultants will be
asked some of these questions anyway, and not documenting things just
increases the questioning load. It's a tough issue.

5. Release notes

We don't have system release notes yet.
