I think the functionality most people would be happy with doesn't lie in
fixing font sizes for them, but rather to emulate the Mac trick of
letting people specify their resolution mode.

Now before everyone piles on and says "can't be done", I have no idea if
it can or can't be set up for people to specify this themselves in a
reasonably easy manner.  I'm just trying to get us thinking out of the
box of a technical fix before thinking about what users want/expect.

The advantage of the Mac way is that people would have to explicitly ASK
for the increased resolution, and once they did make that change, they'd
be expecting to see smaller fonts.  So the challenge of increasing the
font sizes is something they'd understand they'd have to deal with as
part of the enhancement they'd chosen to make, instead of something
thrust mysteriously upon them.  This change in context will greatly
affect how they'll willingly they'll deal with any font-fixing tricks.
