1. Status updates

   - Solaris install.

Installing the whole CD off network takes an hour and 10 minutes.
Installing just the parts we want would take less than 20 minutes.
(This doesn't include patches, but miki doesn't expect that to be
     a problem.)

Updates: We could do the same thing (pkg_add, etc), and it's no
     worse than running track...

Still need to shrink /usr if we want to fit on all existing
machines. Miki is still deciding if that makes more sense than
     saying they need to reinstall.

Thomas suggests we should be installing currently-supported
machines with /usr partitions large enough to fit all of Solaris.
(We aren't currently.) Although Miki points out that some
     packages are really completely useless...

   - Linux

Thomas should have a functional layered install by tonight. Then
he'll install the packages and check in his work. It would be
nice to set up a wash for it. Karl has started working on the
installer. Thomas needs to work on the update frob.

   - Desktop

We are having the first desktop discovery team meeting
immediately after release team. Various bits of work have been
     done.

   - Private WS

Miki hasn't managed to meet with Vijay yet. Bill says we
should "charge ahead" anyway. (Apparently Greg never actually met
with Vijay for the Desktop Project.)

Miki will schedule a meeting with Greg Anderson (and Dan).

Bob, Karl, and Greg want to be on the team.

2. Shared Libraries

If we do GNOME we'll need shared libraries. Even if we don't, Greg
would like to make krb5 shared libraries for the next release. Karl
would like to do some other things as well.

One possibility is to make /usr/athena/lib/shared/ and so then
people won't get them accidentally, and so anyone who does ask for
them explicitly will know they need to do -R too. Everyone except
Greg is dubious that we need to protect users like that.

If we can build the rpath into the shared library, this wouldn't
   be necessary...

Of course we'd track shared libraries local. (Note that currently
we're not even tracking all of /usr/lib/*.so local...)

[Insert libtool flamefest here.] We'll need to do something though
if we want to install shared libs for things other than krb5 (which
   already has shared lib rules).

3. Mail readers, IMAP, and you

kcr: The PO system is moving towards IMAP. This means there are a
lot of new mail reader possibilities. I think enough people want
PINE that we (as opposed to SIPB) should support it. But I think we
should put it in a locker, with an attachandrun script, because
we may need to hack on it faster than the release cycle, and
   install new versions, etc.

ghudson: An attachandrun script implies enough support that we
wouldn't want to support it if it was that volatile.

tb: Also, pine is not free. You can't distribute modified copies.

ghudson: Having an I/S support commitment to non-free software
   seems bad

kcr: Besides pine, there are other mailers that will require lots
of support libraries that we don't want to install (like xforms).
So they'd work better in lockers too.

ghudson: We should get confirmation from the network group that
they want there to be officially-supported IMAP mail readers (that
   leave mail on the servers).

tom: [walking by] Yeah, do it.

4. Potpourri

rbasch: The Irix patch (to not crash) seems to be working.

rbasch: We've discovered that 300MHz O2s are not actually supported
   in 6.5.3 (only 6.5.4).

aurora: The merged Sun/SGI PWS Owners Guide is in OLH now.
