Based on current info from the solpart meeting, 192 unique hostnames
last reported partition sizes with root partitions less than 48MB or
usr partitions less than 100MB. They break down as follows:
24 timed out on athinfo attempts
17 refused athinfo connections
7 were defunct hostnames
121 reported installation times during or prior to March 1997
11 were installed after March 1997 but are now SGIs
8 were installed after March 1997 and are classics
4 are non-classics installed after March 1997
March 1997 was when we made the switch to bigger partitions for
everything but classics and a specific kind of Seagate disk. The
remaining four machines are starbasezero.ne.mediaone.net (Sparc 20),
cat2 and saarinen (Ultra 5 or Ultra 10), and mighty-sparc (SPARC
Voyager). They are probably all custom installs, since cat2 and
saarinen appear to have nonstandard disks. jweiss noted that we give
bad advice for partition sizes for custom installs and has submitted a
patch.
So we seem to be doing fine on current installs (except for the bad
advice), but we still have 121 machines in the field which were
installed a long time ago and have small partitions. Those machines
break down as follows:
37 are cluster machines, judging by their names
13 are classics
18 are public and can presumably be reinstalled trivially
53 are non-public non-classics
Here are the 53 current machines which will need to be reinstalled in
order to take the next full release if we mandate a 48MB root and
100MB usr partition size:
ablutoamania eecs-ath-42 laguna samarkand
arcadia eecs-ath-43 leicester shamrock

deus implant ndelab tracer
dockstreet jensen nile violet
eecs-ath-03 jimi-hendrix pelli
eecs-ath-36 kanga pry-bar
eecs-ath-37 killer rar
Here are the 17 machines with small partitions which refused athinfo
connections and thus are probably still running 8.2:
