This is a major pet peeve of mine.  The engineering of the local
software made sense when system disks were 20meg.  Now that they are
an order of magnitude larger, why not add some things which would be
useful in a network/file server outage situation?  IMHO, it's
ludicrous that ping isn't on the local disk, and only slightly less
unreasonable that telnet and traceroute aren't.
