problems with OpenGL applications on Sun

We are still having problems with OpenGL on Suns. I have been
installing a fancy 3d graphics library set called Visualization
Toolkit that uses OpenGL and find that demos will run on some, but not
all machines.
The short form of the problem report is this: on all Ultra 5's I try
to launch a demo (Mace) on, the application won't start- I get the
following error in the launch window:

On Ultra 10's, it seems to work fine on some (Ultra 10's in 1-115 and
37-312), but not on others (most of the private Ultra 10's I try). On
machines where it doesn't work properly, the application usually launches
(the application window opens), but then the graphics are drawn in
very distorted form, at random places on the screen; one some machines,
it won't launch though, and fails with an X error. It also works OK
on allegretto-temp, which is an Ultra 1 with Creator 3d graphics.

To build and run the test example:
add vtkit_v2.2
set_vtk_demos
then in the window that appears:
Make Mace (or any of the .cxx applications in the local directory)
./Mace
(if it works properly, you will see a nice 3d graphical image that you
can manipulate with the mouse buttons).
