Here's another incompability: the functionality of slitex and amslatex
is built into latex2e, but you have to pull in classes (slides or
amsmath) to use it. And I don't know if you can use them with
compatibility mode or not.
We could build slitex and amslatex by keeping around the latex 209
macros. But it's probably easier to just tell people to add newtex,
or help them convert.
