The patch release that went into testing last week is scheduled to go
out into the field tonight (Tuesday).
Let me (and/or Kim) know if this is a problem... A list of the changes
follows.
Thanks,
Craig
======================================================================
The versions for this release are:
DEC 7.7G
Sun 7.7I
RISC/6000 7.7F
Changes which affect all three platforms:
o MH 6.8 has been changed to not include as a signature the
information from the user's password information. The one
function touched unfortunately caused many binaries of MH
to be relinked, so many theoretically unaffected programs
have changed.
Note: I just found out that due to a random complexity
in building MH, it has effectively _not_ changed for the
Sun and RS6K platforms. At the same time, I found out that
while the signature feature is broken in comp on the Sun
platform, it is not broken at least for other programs
in the MH suite that use the post program (mhmail, send).
Therefore, these (less used) programs, on the non-DEC
platforms only, still include the signature from the user's
password entry. What a mess.
o File protections in the hierarchy /usr/athena/lib/tex have
been changed; many files were not world-readable. While in
AFS filesystems this is not important, it is important on
the dialup machines that have local copies of the packs.
o A warning from xlogin that it couldn't get any groups
from Hesiod has been removed in anticipation of when we
start creating users without giving them their own
group by default.
o reactivate has a minor change so that it will not attempt
to reset the zephyr hostmanager when ZCLIENT is false.
o zwgc has been changed so it does not attempt to reverse-
resolve IP address 0.0.0.0. This is the same binary that
went into /srvd/patch on Saturday, so at some point after
this release goes to the field we will be able to remove
zwgc from /srvd/patch.
DECstation specific changes
o A bug in zwgc causing it to fail to die when it should has
been fixed. (This resulted in orphaned zwgc processes on
private workstations.)
o rc.net has been updated to know about some subnets at
the media lab.
Sun specific changes
o The solaris_reconf script has been updated so that it
functions correctly.
o imake has been updated to the version that was used to
build the release.
o find has been updated to the "official" patch from Sun.
o attach has been updated so that it does not dump core
with a command line such as "attach -e /mit/xxx".
o /dev/audio is chmoded to mode 666 on reboot on PUBLIC
workstations. (This was fixed in the last release, but
this patch re-fixes things in the case where someone
hacks the workstation.)
o syslogd has been updated to a version which, according
to Sun, actually works.
o rcsmerge has been fixed to use a version of diff that
exists.
o discuss no longer coredumps when you ^C an ls.
o /usr/athena/bin/finger now works rather well instead of
returning a mess.
o sendmail.cf has been updated so that mkserv mail can more
easily allow private workstations to receive mail.
RS/6000 specific changes
o zwgc has been fixed so that it will not hang when called
from a user's .startup.X file.
o imake has been updated to the version that was used to
build the release.
o The /srvd/patch version of dash has been copied onto the
packs.
