Athena 8.2.17 for Solaris and 8.2.18 for both IRIX platforms will be
released next Monday evening, 1999-02-08. As mentioned in a previous
piece of mail, the 8.2.17 patch release for Solaris will make the
commands ld, crontab, at, atq, and atrm stop working on 8.2 machines
which have not yet taken the update.  (cron jobs will continue to run;
the crontab command is for viewing and updating crontab files, not
running them.) You can avoid this brokenness either by taking the
8.2.17 update promptly after it goes to field (AUTOUPDATE machines
should generally do this by themselves) or by running a little script
as root:

	add release
	unscrew-8.2.17

You can run this script right now or after the 8.2.17 release goes to
field; it will work either way, and doesn't require a reboot. It just
updates a few shared libraries in /usr/lib.

As always, questions and comments can go to release-team@mit.edu.

Changes in this release include:

	* [New] On IRIX, elmer will destroy user tokens which are
about to expire (one minute away). This is an attempt to
keep IRIX machines from taking down AFS servers with traffic
	  overloads.

	* The moof.mit.edu realm was added to the krb5.conf file.

	* The AFS startup script won't start a server if AFSSERVER is
false in rc.conf (previously it checked for the existence of
	  server binaries).

	* ndc should be able to find the named pid file.

	* The buffer overrun fix for olc is now also fixed for olcr.

	* On Solaris, ufsrestore is no longer setuid due to a
	  reported security hole.

	* The hpcomm printer filter removes ^t from postscript files.

	* attach will no longer run without a config file.

	* The set of patches applied on Solaris has been updated to
the current (as of 12/23 or so) set of recommended and
security patches. There were also a couple of patches
applied for ProEngineer. These are the new patches:
