Transarc sez there's no AFS for Solaris 7.
This derails our plans to release 8.3 based on Solaris 7 in the Fall.

They ask if we're interested in the 32 bit or 64 bit version.

I'd not had a chance to mention this to release team, but here's how the
Solaris 7 64 bit support works:

There are 2 kernels, the 32 bit kernel and the 64 bit kernel.
The 32 bit kernel ONLY supports 32 bit applications.
The 64 bit kernel supporrts both 32 and 64 bit applications.
64 bit applications require 64 bit libraries.
The 32 bit and 64 bit libraries are SEPARATE.
i.e. you cannot mix 32 and 64 bit libraries.

This means:

No 64 bit development could take place unless the 64 bit
	kernel was running.

64 bit development requires creation of 64 bit versions of
	all required libraries.

So if Athena were to support 64 bit development, it might want to do so
earlier rather than later and run the 64 bit kernel. Even so, it would
be a goodly while before 64 bit applications would be delivered.

Side note: yes, this means that the Solaris disk requirements more than
double when 64 bit support happens.

Here is what I plan to tell transarc. Any objections:

Since 64 bit application development cannot occur under the 32 bit
kernel. MIT had planned to run the 64 bit kernel, and ever run
the Solaris 7 kernel in 32 bit mode.

For this reason MIT votes for the 64 bit Solaris 7 port.

Hi Bill,

There is currently no AFS for Soalris 7. Development has started to
determine what will be required for a 32 bit port and after that
we should have some estimate on when a beta port of AFS 3.5 on
Solaris 7 will be available.

Product management is currently considering plans for a 64 bit port,
but that is not something for the near future.

Are you interested in beta testing either the 32 bit port, the 64 bit
port, or both?

Thanks,

	Neil
