Athena 8.2.17 will be released on Thursday evening 1/28/1999. This
patch release will be a little more noticeable than most patch
releases. The biggest known interaction is that Sun workstations that
are running athena 8.2, and do not take the patch release will not be
able to compile new programs (the link step will fail). Users
encountering this problem will see an error message like the
following:
athena% /usr/gcc/bin/gcc /afs/athena/user/g/h/ghudson/tools/hello.c
ld.so.1: /usr/ccs/bin/ld: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/lib/libld.so.2: symbol _elf_getxoff: referenced symbol not found
gcc: Internal compiler error: program ld got fatal signal 9
Unfortunately, the only solution is to either update the workstation
in question, or move to a workstation that has been updated if you
want to compile programs.
Changes in this release include:
* The moof.mit.edu realm was added to the krb5.conf file.
* The AFS startup script won't start a server if AFSSERVER is
false in rc.conf (previously it checked for the existence of
server binaries).
* ndc should be able to find the named pid file.
* The buffer overrun fix for olc is now also fixed for olcr.
* On Solaris, ufsrestore is no longer setuid due to a
reported security hole.
* The hpcomm printer filter removes ^t from postscript files.
* attach will no longer run without a config file.
* The set of patches applied on Solaris has been updated to
the current (as of 12/23 or so) set of recommended and
security patches. There were also a couple of patches
applied for ProEngineer. These are the new patches:
