I asked Bob to investigate Y2K compliance for our legacy SGI systems.
The answer he produced is of interest to the Release Team, and Owls. We
should do a little soul searching about how we want to approach Y2K
compliance. While we can expect an IRIX 6.5 deployment in the Fall of
this year, we can't expect everyone will have taken it.

Here's what I found re: y2k issues at the SGI Supportfolio
web site:

IRIX 6.5 is Silicon Graphics recommended solution for Year 2000
compliance. Silicon Graphics recommends that you upgrade all machines
to the IRIX 6.5 operating system before the end of 1999. However, we
realize that this is not always possible. For that reason, Silicon
Graphics has created patches for Year 2000 compliance for IRIX 5.3,
	6.2, 6.3, and 6.4. These Year 2000 enhancement/patches are available
to all customers free of charge.

Starting October 1998, all Year 2000 patches will be on the
	Recommended/Required patch set.

Somewhat helpful, but this raises the issue of how safe it is to
install the patch sets. (These patches can include new features
and functionality as well as bug fixes, and so tend to require
more testing than we might like). We could try to install only
the y2k-related patches, but they generally recommend installing
all patches as a set. (It's also conceivable that a y2k patch
will introduce new functionality).
