Sun patch release 7.7H for /dev/audio and mtools

There are two reasonably inconvenient problems in the Sun 7.7G release
which warrant a quick patch release. The current workarounds for both
of these problems require the user to become root on the workstation
to remedy them. For various reasons this is an undesirable state of
affairs.

The first problem is that the file /dev/audio is not accessible to the
general user, resulting in the user's inability to use sound on the
workstations. This was intended to work correctly in the initial
release of 7.7, but due to an oversight does not.

The second problem is that a daemon (vold) running under Solaris 2.3
is locking the floppy device such that the mtools package (software
used to manipulate MS-DOS disks) fails to function. The correct fix is
to teach mtools to work properly with vold; however, until that fix
can be implemented (I am working with the maintainer of mtools to get
this taken care of), we are going with the incorrect fix of not
starting vold by default. I expect the impact of this change to be
minimal in the short term. In the long term the impact could be
significant, but this change will not last into the long term.

This patch release (for the Sun platform only) should be going into
the field sometime tonight (Wednesday).

Talk to me, Kim, or Anne if you know of any problems with this.

Thanks,
Craig
