I found this in /mit/dcnshtml/dev/oplans/irix5.3.html
vintage March 1996.

(IE Old plans, under a decomissioned locker: the plan for migrating to
Irix 5.3 way back when.)

Apparently the number before the exclamation point was the number of
machines of that required configuration known to exist at that time.

We should inventory the machines we have for testing and the machines we
have contacts for, and point out the reality of what we are able to
test, and arrange either:

their graceful migration to a supported (IE something we have in-house
to test with) platform, or
to get sign off that they accept that we can't test for that platform or
to commit ourselves to obtaining a test machine for that sub-platform
and do it right.

Personally, I'd like to focus forward as much as possible, and would
most prefer, over the next 12 months to pursue the graceful migration
strategy.
