Staff Test for Athena Release 7.7 will be available starting around noon
tomorrow (Wednesday). Release 7.7 is supported on the Sun, DECstation,
and RISC/6000 platforms; the last supported release for VAXstations is
7.6. System and User Release Notes documenting the changes for this
release are (or will be shortly) available in the E40 and building 11
mail areas.

Only certain workstations are configured for staff test. For
information on checking whether workstation is set for staff test or
not, and how to change your configuration (either add or remove your
workstation from staff test), see the section V. "If your workstation
has not update", particularly item 2.

I. How to Tell if Your Workstation has Updated

Some time after you log out *tomorrow*, your workstation will
probably automatically update to the new release. However, some
will need to be updated manually.

To check whether you workstation has updated, type:

	machtype -A

If you have taken the update it will read 7.7.

    >> Do not expect your workstation to be running release 7.7 first <<
    >> thing tomorrow morning. Staff test will not be available until <<
    >> mid-day. <<

II. Reporting Bugs

Report problems in the new release using sendbug.

III. Questions

If you have questions about taking the new release, send them
    to me (dot@mit).

IV. Open Issues

There are several as-yet unresolved problems in this first staff
test release. None are major, and if you don't understand the
    description, don't worry about them.

    1. Ez does not handle rasters in toolsets correctly.
    2. Limit on number of groups on DECstation needs to be resolved.
    3. LaTeX is missing nopagenumbers.sty and nopagenumbers.doc.
    4. zwgc leaves defunct processes
    5. zwgc dies in tty mode
    6. rlogin closes connections when run in encrypted mode from a
       DECstation to a Sun

These bugs should be fixed very shortly:

   7. Backspace in emacs does not delete the previous character
      (RISC/6000)
   8. xolc does not work (RISC/6000)
   9. quota -v returns nothing (Suns)

V. If your workstation has not updated

If your machine has taken the update, you may safely ignore the rest
    of this message.

There are are few reasons why your workstation may not have
    automatically updated.

    1. AUTOUPDATE is set to false on your workstation.

To find out if AUTOUPDATE is false, type:

  	grep AUTOUPDATE /etc/athena/rc.conf

If it is set to false, you'll need to update manually. See the
       section "Updating a workstation manually".

    2. Your workstation is not configured for staff test. (This does not
apply if you were a friendly tester.)

In order to get the release, the hesiod cluster information for
       your workstation must be 'staff-sys'.

To find out the hesiod cluster information for your machine, type:

  		hesinfo `hostname` cluster

       If you see the line

  		syslib staff-sys

you are prepared to take staff test. If it is not set correctly,
you cannot get the update either automatically or manually. You
can change your hesiod information by sending mail to Anne Salemme
(salemme@mit) with your workstation hostname and a statement that
you wish to be in staff test.

	>> If you are in staff test and do not wish to take the new <<
	>> release, send mail to Anne (salemme@mit) or Dot (dot@mit) <<
 	>> *immediately*. If neither is around, edit <<
	>> /etc/athena/rc.conf, and change the values of the <<
	>> AUTOUPDATE and PUBLIC variables to false. <<

VI. Updating a workstation manually

    1) Login as root on the console.

       On a Sun or DECstation:

Shutdown X, by hitting CTRL-P on the machine. Then login as
"root" (the default password is "mrroot").

       On a RISC/6000:

Hit ALT-ACT to switch to the "console" hft. Then login as
root (the default password is "mrroot").

    2) Shutdown timesharing

       DECstation users
       -----------------------------
       Type:

	    /bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
	    /bin/athena/attach -h -n staff-sys
            /etc/shutdown now

It will take about 30 seconds for the machine to shutdown. After
30 seconds, you will see a warning message of the form:

WARNING: Something is hung (wont die); ps axl advised

       Ignore it.

You should now see a # prompt. Press <RETURN> and make sure a
new # prompt appears on the next line. If it appears on the
       same line, typing

/usr/ucb/reset (which will not appear in this situation)

will correct the problem. This problem has been most evident
if you force a shutdown while X is running (ie. not following
       the directions in step 1).

       Sun users
       -----------------------------
       Type:

	    /bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
	    /bin/athena/attach -h -n staff-sys

       RISC/6000 users
       ---------------
    	Type:
	     /bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
	     /bin/athena/attach -h -n -a staff-sys

    3) Type:

	    /srvd/update_ws reactivate

This may ask you to press <RETURN> or prompt you for other information.
The prompts should be intelligible (you've no doubt gone through all
these questions during previous updates; there's nothing radically new
       in this update).

    4) After the update says it has updated the version number and another
       # prompt has appeared, type:

	    /etc/reboot

       Sun users
       ---------
During the reboot process you may see several error messages,
all of which can be ignored. They include the following:

dm: X failed to be come ready
Unable to start X, doing console login instead

Also, the /usr file system does not fsck cleanly.
