Miki is away this week, but she sent me email proposing work to put the
Athena release in shape to support the new line of Ultras announced last
week.
The new Ultras require Solaris 2.5.1 Hardware 11/97 or Solaris 2.6
Hardware 3/98.
(The reason why the 2.6 version hasn't been released is that the effort
was focused on making 2.5.1 work first and fast.)
Summary:
1. Investigate the scope of an Athena 8.1 update that will support the
new hardware.
2. Incorporate into the Athena 8.2/Solaris 2.6 what is necessary to deal
with the bump in the road of needing Solaris 2.6 11/98 to support the
hardware.
Bottom line: Miki says it's not hard.
Skeletal Work plan:
1. when we get the [2.5.1 11/97] CD, miki will produce an alternative
8.1 os (sun4x_55) in AFS. let us call it os1.
2. we will test os1 through hesiod changes to few burn machines
3. we will release os1 to the public (march ?)
4. the work on 2.6 will be carried on and when we get the new 2.6
we will recreate the os for the summer release (sun4x_56)
I propose that we discuss this beginning with tomorrow's Release Team meeting.
