Hi, I've noticed a lot of people using the 'xlock'
screensaver and it makes it difficult
to tell how long the machine has been locked, as
well as presumably being against the "athena rules of use."
I suspect these users simply don't know that there is a problem.
So could you maybe either remove xlock from the system
or make it print a warning message first explaining
how and why to run a normal locked xscreensaver?

There are two forms of 'xlock' screensaver on Athena. The first is on the
machines themselves, and is named 'xlock'; it would be the release team's
job to modify the configuration or remove the program.
The other one is installed in the outland locker as 'xlockmore'; it has a
number of improvements over the vendor-supplied 'xlock,' and, most
importantly, it has been configured to show idle time and to provide a
logout button after a period of time. To view these two items, however,
one must press a key to get to the password entry screen.
