Agenda
======
  1. Status of Beta ("Friendly") test
  2. Preparing for Staff Test
  3. Co-ordinating for release of Staff Test

Notes
=====
1. Status

  a) Bugs as reported to testers

[Note: this list is not intended to be 100% accurate. I assembled
it by reviewing the testers discuss meeting and intentionally left
out certain bugs I knew were either fixed or not crucial. - dot]

A complete summary of the bugs, status, and rating (crucial or not)
is available as an Xess 3 spreadsheet in /mit/dot/Public/bugs.xs3.

The following bugs are still open and critical to fix for staff
test, are otherwise of an uncertain status, or are still under
    investigation:

		    Bug Discuss #
		----------- ---------
EZ - printing and preview broken (troff mis-installed) [2409],[2458]
EZ raster: error on bringing up toolset [2439]
    Maple font problems [2440]
    xcal, Maple translation errors [2458],[2503]
    wrong version of strings.h [2469]
    Compose Character + key != ESC			      [2509]
eos and grade dump core [2528]
    xolc doesn't run [2529]

Many of the other reported bugs are fixed and awaiting the next beta
release (7.7C for Sun, 7.7B for DEC and IBM)

  b) LaTeX

A very open issue at this point is the new version of LaTeX
installed as part of release 7.7. Dot is trying to track down
information on what changed and figure out if pieces are really
missing or not. Bert, the sipb member who did the work, is
currently in Yugoslavia, and is reading email but not consistently.
This may or may not become a major problem.

[Note: In a worse-case scenario, any .sty files which really are
missing could be installed in a locker and users told to modify
their TEXINPUTS path. I'd rather not have to resort to that,
    though.]

  c) Steve is working on implementing Miki's test plan for AFS 3.3
    clients.

  d) The good news

Lots of things on the checklist Anne LaVin made last year actually
    do work.

2. Staff Test preparation

  a) Release Notes

Kevin is putting together a text-only draft of the notes he has
gathered thus far and will send a copy out to the release-77 and
testers mailing lists some time next week. He'll need input and
feedback on those areas of missing information.

Mark is working on the system release notes.

We need both of these release notes for staff test.

  b) Posters

Kevin will make sure that posters are ready.

  c) Signs for Public workstations

Kevin (TPS) will make the signs and co-ordinate with John Chase to
put them out in the clusters. Each public workstation taking the
release will get a sign and some number of user release notes in
     addition to the wall posters.

  d) Hesiod cluster pointers

Dot will check with Anne Salemme to ensure that everything is ready
     to go smoothly.

  e) Installation Procedures

The DECstation and RS/6000 installation procedures have not changed
since last year (at least as of now.) John Chase will test out the
Sun procedure by re-installing the public machines as 7.7.

3. Co-ordinating for release of Staff Test

Criteria for going ahead with Staff Test

    a) All bugs flagged as critical must be confirmed as fixed
    b) The problem with Carla not getting tokens on the RS/6000 should
be identified and confirmed fixed if at all possible. (Simply
having it "go away" is not considered fixing it.)
    c) System and User Release Notes should be available
    d) Ideally, the LaTeX issue should be resolved
    e) Most of the applications identified in
/mit/release77/WhatShouldRun should actually run. (Things like
the 6.021J software are open to debate)
    f) AFS 3.3 client testing should be underway or completed.

   Giving the go-ahead

We will meet next Friday at 11:11 to examine the status of the
release and determine whether to proceed with Staff Test on
Monday, July 11th, or to hold off until later that week.
