Subject: 8.1.9 in the dev cell

Athena patch release 8.1.9 has gone out to the dev cell for both
platforms.  Here are the changes:

	* The tty login program has been modified to correctly zero
	  out all of the password buffer, and has a locking fix on
	  Solaris.

	* cleanup and the provisional Athena login library (and ergo
	  telnetd) have a (different) locking fix.

	* talkd has a signal-handling fix.

	* dvips -Pprintername now works.

	* The AFS cache manager was upgraded to the July 1997 AFS
	  3.4a.patches release on both platforms. The primary
	  motivation for this upgrade is frequent lockups on Sparc 4
	  clients. We don't know if this upgrade will fix the
	  problem (and in fact, we have some inconclusive evidence
	  that it won't help) but it eliminates a variable.

	* mh has been modified on Solaris to account for a vi bug
	  where vi may exit with a nonzero exit status even if the
	  editing session was successful.

	* A bug has been fixed in gettime to make it time out
	  properly.

	* The backing store has been disabled again on the SGI X
	  server. We don't think we need it for Autocad, and it
	  appears to cause workstations with some versions of the
	  graphics board to crash periodically (the "SGI blue line"
	  problem).

	* The public workstation cleanup now does a chmod to make the
	  zip drive SCSI device accessible so that mtools can work.

[irrelevant stuff removed from forwarded mail.]
