I will be gone from Monday August 4 to Sunday August 10 (two working
days and five weekdays). I may read my email during that time, but I
probably can't be relied on to get any work done.
The release-related issues I'm leaving behind are:
* 8.1.8 is going out to the Athena cell with a fix to two
critical bugs. It should still go out on Monday night, and
reminder mail should be sent to release-announce on Sunday
or Monday.
* "dvips -Pprintername" is broken; it will be fixed in a patch
release which should go out to the Athena cell on the 19th
or 26th. The workaround is to use "setenv PRINTER" or print
to a postscript file and user lpr.
* Sparc 4 clients are freezing with some regularity. We have
some good reasons to believe that it's a software problem
(Lou downgraded a problematic machine to 8.0 and it hasn't
had any problems); I think it may be AFS. People who are
seeing regular freezing are encouraged to test the
3.4a.patches.5 cache manager by copying
/mit/afsuser/dist/3.4a.patches.5/sun4x_55/root.client/usr/vice/etc/modload/libafs.nonfs.o
to /kernel/fs/afs and rebooting. (You have to do the change
over again after taking a patch release, incidentally.) If
it seems to help anyone's machine, I'll put it in the 8.1.9
patch release.
* Zip drives may be coming in, and may require changes to the
release on the SGIs. That will wait until 8.1.9 goes out.
If anything needs immediate attention, I think Craig is sufficiently
familiar with the new world order to handle it.
