An 8.1 patch release for both Sun and SGI workstations is scheduled to
be deployed on Monday August 4. The changes are:

	* The pscomm print filter has been modified to use POSIX
signal calls, fixing its behavior in response to repeat
	  signals.

	* telnet and telnetd have been modified to use POSIX signal
calls, fixing their behavior in response to repeat signals.

	* telnet has been modified slightly to work around an SGI
compiler bug affecting the transition to line mode. This
bug manifested itself as random characters (like ^P)
appearing at the prompt when using a shell which supports
	  line mode.

	* The emacs site-start.el file has been modified to support
gnus mail-reading. (This change was supposed to go out in
8.1.5 but was missed by mistake.)

	* The Solaris lp crontab file has been deleted. We don't need
it and it was generating mail to postmaster.

	* The Solaris install script has been updated to put tmp on
	  the /var partition.

	* The Appletalk driver install for Solaris has been fixed.

	* The Solaris /etc/services includes bootp and bootpc now.

	* The Solaris /etc/nscd.conf file has been removed, turning
off nscd. nscd was causing problems where a user would log
in and not be in the passwd file, which would lead to not
getting any xterms and to having mail not work.

Questions about the release should go to release-team@mit.edu.
