Athena Release 8.1.4 will be available for workstations in the early
cluster starting Wednesday July 18. This round of testing will
hereafter be refered to as "early test."

If your workstation is configured to update automatically and you log
out when you leave today, it will update to 8.0 by the time you return
tomorrow morning. Your workstation is configured to update
automatically if the variable AUTOUPDATE is set to true in
/etc/athena/rc.conf:

  athena% grep AUTO /etc/athena/rc.conf
AUTOUPDATE=true; export AUTOUPDATE # Automatically update?

If your workstation is configured not to update automatically, then
you must manually take the update.

NOTE: This release introduces a significant change into the process of
taking a manual update. Due to a more restrictive attach.conf, you
must use the -O option when attaching system packs as root
(e.g. "attach -h -n -O dev-sgisys-81"). Using the -O option is not
necessary for updating from 8.0 to 8.1, but it will become necessary
from then on.

The following machine(s) are in the early cluster, and you may update
them whenever you wish (see section IV, below):

m37-312.37
m37-312.38
m37-312.39
m37-312.40

I. Reporting Bugs

Report problems in the new release to testers@mit.edu.

II. Questions

If you have questions about taking the new release, send them
    to the release team (release-team@mit).

III. Release Changes

Many changes have been made in the 8.1 release; some of the most
    notable ones are:

	* Solaris 2.5.1
	* Kerberos 5 versions of the krlogind and krshd daemons
	* Athena version numbers are now composed of three numbers
instead of two digits and a letter.
	* The default "xmkmf" command is now the vendor xmkmf.

An unfinished version of the user release notes is available at:

	http://web.mit.edu/olh/Release/8.1/

The system release notes are maintained in
    /afs/dev.mit.edu/project/relnotes/rel81.tex for those interested
in a more complete list of changes.

IV. Updating a workstation manually

    1) Login as root on the console.

Shutdown X, by hitting CTRL-P on the machine. Then login as
"root" (the default password is "drroot", but I really hope
that your root password is different).

    2) Attach new system packs

       Sun users
       ---------
       Type:

	    /bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
	    /bin/athena/attach -h -n -O dev-sun4sys-81

       SGI users
       ---------
       Type:

	    /bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
	    /bin/athena/attach -h -n -O dev-sgisys-81

    3) Type:

	    /srvd/update_ws reactivate

This may ask you to press <RETURN> at some point. This update
is different from previous updates in that it reboots the
machine twice. The first reboot happens automatically even
when you perform the update manually, but you are given a
chance to look around before the second reboot. (If you are
       updating a machine remotely, enter "/srvd/update_ws -r
reactivate" to avoid the shell after the reboot.)

As usual, the /usr filesystem does not fsck cleanly on Suns
after the first reboot; this is not a problem.

    4) When the update has completed and you are given a shell prompt,
type "exit". The machine will reboot again and will come up
       with the new release.
