Good morning,

The newest Debathena Release, based on Ubuntu 12.04 ("Precise"), is
scheduled be deployed to IS&T-maintained public cluster machines on the
evening of Wednesday, August 15. (A final announcement will be sent out
immediately prior to the release date, including upgrade instrutions for
private workstation owners.)

This release will be rolled out to our "early" machines on the evening
of Wednesday, August 8. These "early" machines include 4
workstations in 12-182, 3 in 56-129, and 11 machines in W20-575.

This also represents the final opportunity for testers to submit feedback
to the Athena Release Team prior to public deployment. Users who choose
to participate in testing should read http://debathena.mit.edu/testing for
more information and send their feedback to <testers@mit.edu>. Please
note that the PXE (network-based) installed still defaults to Natty, and
testers will need to follow the prompts to select 'precise' as their
distribution.

Preliminary release notes can be found in the MIT Knowledge Base at:
http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/CQCKC
We will be updating them between now and the release date.

As with all Athena releases, a downgrade is not possible without wiping
and re-installing the workstation, so users who rely on Athena for their
daily work and/or use software not maintained or installed by IS&T
(including software installed in course lockers) are strongly encouraged
to make use of this period to test their software with the new version to
ensure compatibility.

If you are receiving this e-mail, but are no longer responsible for Athena
workstations or software in your department, lab, or center, please
forward this message to your colleagues and encourage them to sign up for
this list at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/release-announce
(You may also manage your own subscription to this list at URL listed
above.)

Cordially,

Jonathan Reed
for the Athena Release Team
