_IOSTRG is a hack for use by sprintf.

I vaguely remember putting that there (actually, I thought I put code
like that in the server, but perhaps it wandered over into the library
later. No matter).

It is used as the equivalent of vsprintf, an ANSI C function which
isn't in our C library.

I would have used vsprintf had it existed in our C library.

Perhaps the AIX C library has vsprintf; if it doesn't, good luck.
