The machine jlab-21 referred to is running a very old Athena release, about 8 years old,
and I'm not sure if it's able to run MATLAB 9.2 which is the current MATLAB version.
The way to launch the current MATLAB release on an Athena machine is to type:
add matlab
matlab
in a terminal window.
