This is usually due to an unclean shutdown of firefox on a different
machine, due to the AFS home directory being shared across multiple
machines.

If you are sure you are not logged in somewhere else and running firefox,
the instructions at
http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=3906992 should
get firefox running again.
