(sorry for the slow reply; I somehow missed your reply, and you didn't CC 
debathena@mit.edu, so nobody else saw it).

OK.  It is likely the case that the openafs-modules-generic package got 
uninstalled during a recent kernel upgrade; try installing it and seeing 
if it fixes the problem for you (assuming you've not fixed the problem 
yourself already ... it has been 10 days).
