t r u t h o u t | In journalism school, I learned that democracy requires an informed citizenry in order to function. My duty as a reporter, I was told, was to track down accurate information about public affairs and make that information accessible to the public so my fellow citizens could make informed decisions at the polls. I still believe that an informed citizenry is the bedrock of a healthy democracy, but our democracy is anything but healthy, and that means the media is not doing its job.

In a world where billionaires and the corporations can spend millions of dollars on TV ads and lobbying firms to sway elections and influence politicians, it's not enough to simply report what politicians say and do. Real journalism follows the money and exposes the real forces behind public policy.

We can't expect the mainstream media to go the extra mile, when it's beholden to wealthy moguls and corporate advertisers that have a vested interest in the status quo. Powerful politicians grant mainstream journalists access to the halls of power in exchange for a guarantee that the toughest questions will not be asked.

It's not enough to simply repeat what Politician A says about Politician B. Real journalism amplifies the voices of people who are making real change in their communities - and it inspires further action toward change. That's why I'm proud to be a reporter at Truthout. We are supported by our community of readers, not the rich and powerful. Nobody is stopping me from asking tough questions, amplifying grassroots voices and revealing truths about our world.
