t r u t h o u t | In the year 1027, King Canute - lord of the North Sea Emp=
ire comprising Denmark, England, Norway and parts of Sweden - had grown wea=
ry of the sycophants in his court, and of those among his subjects who beli=
eved his power to be limitless. He led them to the shore of the sea and com=
manded the incoming tide to roll back, to show them that his powers did ind=
eed have limits. Right on schedule, the tide did not obey him, and his poin=
t was made.

Almost a thousand years later, North Carolina state legislators from some 2=
0 seaside communities are in the process of trying to pull a Canute, minus =
the irony of the King's instructive intent. In the face of virtually univer=
sal consensus that the ocean will rise by more than a meter in the next cen=
tury, heavily impacting those seaside communities, those 20 legislators hav=
e devised a novel approach to the problem: Pass a law to make any rise in t=
he sea level illegal=E2=80=A6 or, more to the point, to make any accurate s=
cientific measure of that sea level rise illegal.

No, really, this is an actual thing. Insert fingers in ears and repeat afte=
r me: "No no no no I can't hear you I am not listening no no no," lather ri=
nse repeat. King Canute tried this number and got wet anyway. These North C=
arolina legislators and the communities they represent face the same fate, =
and ignoring the matter won't help one whit when the waves are lapping at t=
heir fleeing heels a mile from the shoreline.

Far too many people hold to the mindset of these North Carolina flat-earthe=
rs: Ignore it, and it will go away. Far too many people are still cashing i=
n on denying science in favor of fossil fuel-subsidized "studies" that ask =
the age-old huckster's question - who do you believe, me or your lyin' eyes=
?

Climate change is real. The incredible impact it will have, in America and =
all around the world, is real. We at Truthout are dedicated to the simple p=
remise that facts matter, science matters, and that we are all inescapably =
bound to the same fate if the seas rise to claim us. We work to convince pe=
ople, one mind at a time, that this is the signal challenge of our age, and=
we need your help to do it.=20

We still need to raise more than $43,000 this month, and we're off to a slo=
w start. Please, take a moment to make a tax-deductible donation now.
