ose: Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has withdrawn his name from considera=
tion for the position of Federal Reserve Chair.
Why celebrate? The headline from a Truthout story by economist Dean Baker s=
ays it all: "The Economy Is Awful and Larry Summers Should Not Be Fed Chair=
."=20
This is the man who, under President Clinton, paved the way for the economi=
c crash of 2008 with his enthusiasm for financial deregulation - and then, =
as one of President Obama's advisors, helped ensure that "too big to fail" =
banks remained intact. (Not to mention, the man who said an "innate" differ=
ence between men and women was the cause of under-representation of female =
scientists at elite universities.)
Pressure to prevent Summers from getting the top job at the Fed resulted in=
part from the criticism and reporting published at Truthout and other inde=
pendent media outlets - the mainstream media certainly wasn't interested in=
examining his real record. This is another example of why what we do is im=
