Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Technology Update
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF Strengthens DCE Security In Next Release
OSF will enhance its Distributed Computing Environment
(DCE) by adding a DCE Audit subsystem which it has
licensed from IBM. The Audit subsystem strengthens the
security of DCE as a distributed system, which is
critical for security conscious customers.
Audit has been identified as a key requirement by the
Security Work Group of the DCE Special Interest Group
(SIG). An Audit subsystem enables logging of security
relevant events and the resulting audit trail may be
used to expose possible access violations and tampering
in a distributed environment.
The Audit subsystem was developed by the IBM Programming
Systems Laboratory in Toronto, Canada, and will be
included by OSF in the next release of DCE, Release 1.1.
"Over the years IBM has developed significant skills and
experience through developing mission-critical systems,"
said Peter Hunt, DCE Product Manager, IBM Canada
Laboratory. "Audit shows how IBM is applying those
skills in the open distributed environment to solve an
important need of IBM customers. We're very proud that
OSF has chosen IBM technology to enhance DCE security,"
continued Hunt.
This announcement demonstrates OSF's commitment to
position DCE as the pre-eminent distributed computing
architecture in the commercial environment. IBM is one
of the founding members of OSF, and this announcement
demonstrates IBM's continuing commitment to OSF and to
OSF's DCE as a key, strategic technology.
AES Distributed Computing, RPC Volume available
In September, the Open Software Foundation and PTR
Prentice Hall announced the publication of the
Application Environment Specification, Distributed
Computing, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Volume. In
keeping with OSF's long-standing policy, organizations
that create their own implementations based solely on
the specifications in the AES DCE published by PTR
Prentice Hall may do so on a royalty free basis.
All of the services, application programming interfaces
(APIs) and protocols specified in this first volume are
actually in use today in the DCE based products that are
currently shipping from various system vendors and ISVs.
The AES specification for Remote Procedure Calls is also
included in the DCE specification submitted to the
X/Open Fast Track process and is currently under review
for adoption into the next release of XPG.
This new volume specifies protocols, services, and APIs,
and provides a portability guide for RPC application
programs and a conformance specification for RPC
implementations. RPC application programmers and
developers of DCE implementations will find important
specifications for Remote Procedure Call services,
interfaces, protocols, encoding rules, and the Interface
Definition Language in this new volume.
Future volumes will specify other distributed services
such as the Distributed Time Service, Directory
Services, Security Services, Threads Services, and the
Distributed File System. Together, the volumes of the
AES DCE will provide a comprehensive portability and
interoperability specification for distributed
computing.
DCE R1.0.3 planned for support customers
We will offer a DCE 1.0.3 release to customers with
support contracts. This release includes changed files
for defect fixes, new platform support, and some
incremental functionality. The DCE R1.0.3 release will
be delivered automatically to those with active support
contracts. The code will be covered under the existing
license and price list. We are currently planning to
release the core in December and DFS in January.
Enhancements in 1.0.3 include a new IDL compiler,
completion of threadsafe XDS work, addition of CMIP
protocol requirements to the OSI upper layers to
facilitate DME OSI support, performance enhancements to
DFS read and write system calls, estimated to improve
performance 10-15% using the NFS connectathon tests as
benchmark, some enhancements to dce_config, such as
unconfiguring a client machine and logging the
configuration process to a file, and core component
system tests updated to run via the TET test scaffold.

OSF/1 Highlights
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF/1 Sabbatical will work with microkernel architecture
Sabbatical openings exist on the OSF/1 team for
engineers with experience in UNIX/Mach internals and
UNIX commands and libraries. We are working on release
1.3, which includes a new microkernel architecture and
some additional UNIX features. Working alongside OSF
engineers as a sabbatical is a great way for a licensee
to get an early start on understanding and adopting this
new technology. For more information, contact Susan
Kegel at 617-621-8956 or kegel@osf.org.
OSF Announces Availability of First Microkernel-based
OSF/1 Snapshot
The first snapshot of the OSF/1 operating system Release
1.3 is available from the Open Software Foundation.
This is the first of three snapshots planned for Release
1.3, leading to general availability of the technology
in 1994. OSF/1 Release 1.3 will maintain full backwards
compatibility with OSF/1 Release 1.2.
The first snapshot provides an early look for OSF
members at the microkernel-based OSF/1 Release 1.3
source code. In addition to the new architecture, the
snapshot includes an updated OSF/1 threads
implementation designed for greater operating system
independence. A new loader which implements system V.4
style shared libraries also is provided. The OSF/1
Release 1.3 development plans also will incorporate
the recently proposed common interface specification for
UNIX based operating systems.
If you would like to license this technology, please
contact OSF Direct at direct@osf.org or 617-621-7300 to
obtain the proper licensing application.
OSF Agrees to Deliver New Test Framework To X/Open
The Open Software Foundation announced it has formalized
arrangements to deliver its Project CALVIN testing
framework to X/Open. This new framework, with its large
number of test cases, will form the major part of the
X/Open Commands and Utilities Test Suite (XCUTS).
This test suite will augment the present VSX4 system
interfaces and headers test suite with new tests for
XPG4 and POSIX commands and utilities.
The Project CALVIN test framework development effort has
been spearheaded by OSF and involved a team of
developers from IBM, Digital and Hitachi. OSF and its
sponsor partners offered the CALVIN test suite to X/Open
as part of the continuing commitment to standardization
for open operating systems. These tests are the basis
for what eventually will be a comprehensive test suite
for systems being developed using the OSF/1 operating
system, as well as a general-purpose testing framework
suitable for a wide-range of testing needs, including
the new unified UNIX specification announced September
1.
OSF/1 V1.2.2 Available for Distribution
The OSF/1 V1.2.2 integrated kernel maintenance release is
currently available. If you would like more information
on OSF/1 V1.2.2, please contact support for more

OSF/1 was demonstrated at UNIX Expo
IBM and Digital demonstrated their implementations of
the OSF/1 operating system at UNIX Expo in the OSF
booth. IBM was demonstrated a Mach V3.0 microkernel
implementation with the OSF/1 environment running
on a PS/2. Digital demonstrated their 64-bit
implementation of the OSF/1 operating system on an Alpha
platform. Both of these demonstration were well
received by the attendees at UNIX Expo, generating many
requests for follow on information about the OSF/1
technology.
