Lori,

Really big PDFs will take longer to print, but I’m not sure if that’s really an issue with PaperCut or our printers. (The printer in my office takes longer to print a PDF directly than our classroom and cluster printers take to print the same PDF via PaperCut.)

We have PaperCut set to deny any print attempts for paper sizes other than 8.5”x11” in our computer clusters and classrooms, and it has worked really well for us. We also deny print jobs based on file size for our much older printers that don’t have the memory to handle those really large files (including PDFs - and the file size limitations were configured by trial and error). We have not set those limitations on our departmental Xerox printers.

We customized our “Printing Denied” messages to students to explain why those jobs were denied, and made sure to add “Your account has not been charged for this attempt to print.” That last sentence, if they read the message at all, is what students actually seem to read.

Kathy

There is a lot of tracking/logging available but it takes a little work to parse the data. All students jobs are available at identified public printers for release. If not released within 24 hrs the jobs are automatically deleted. Points (cost) is not applied until the job is printed. Employee printing is billed back to the department and students are allotted a certain amount of printing with their college account and additional points can be purchased.
