Dear colleagues,
Ensuring that MIT’s student residential experience is as excellent as
its academic experience is a key goal for the Division of Student Life.
Three current major housing projects—the Site 4 development for graduate
housing in Kendall Square, renovations to New House, and construction of
the new undergraduate residence on Vassar Street—are the first of many
more that will launch in the coming years. To help guide DSL through
these critical and complex projects, David Friedrich, associate dean of
students at Harvard College, will join us next month as senior director
of housing operations and renewal planning.
In his role at MIT, David will be a member of DSL’s senior leadership
team reporting to me, and will work closely with colleagues across MIT
to manage all capital housing projects. He will also oversee day-to-day
operations of the Housing Office, promoting conditions that are
conducive to transformative educational experiences for our students.
At Harvard, David has provided leadership for residential life and
housing in their Office of Student Life. He manages housing operations,
supporting the faculty, staff, and approximately 5,000 students who live
and work in Harvard’s housing system. Additionally, he has served as
point person to represent Harvard College’s interests in planning for
the capital renewal of the university’s historic undergraduate house
system, including helping students temporarily relocate during
construction periods. That experience will be a huge boon to DSL and MIT
as we move further along the critical path of our own housing renewal plans.
David joins us officially on July 19 when he will assume responsibility
for the Housing Office. I am certain he will get off to a running start
thanks to the steady, thoughtful leadership provided by Peter Cummings.
David will also greatly benefit from Jen Hapgood-White’s unparalleled
knowledge of MIT’s unique housing system, and her ability to form strong
partnerships with students. I would like to thank Peter and Jen for
their dedication during a busy and challenging time in housing.
David will join us at the DSL staff retreat on June 21, so please make
him feel welcome. For now, join me in congratulating David on his new
role in DSL and at MIT.
Best regards,
Suzy
