Dear colleagues,

Religious life has been a part of MIT since the first chaplains arrived
on campus in 1864. The role of chaplain to the Institute—first filled by
Robert M. Randolph in 2007—was envisioned in the mid-1950s by President
James Killian, who took major steps to bolster the place of religious
life on campus. Today, I’m happy to announce another landmark in
religious life at MIT, as Reverend Kirstin Boswell-Ford has been
appointed the second chaplain to the Institute, and director of the
Office of Religious Life.

Rev. Boswell-Ford will oversee the Board of Chaplains to provide
spiritual and personal support to students, faculty, staff, and the MIT
community. As a member of the Division of Student Life’s senior staff,
she will also be an important voice in conversations about community
support, diversity and inclusion, and student wellbeing.

Currently, Rev. Boswell-Ford is associate chaplain of the university for
the protestant community at Brown University. She has helped create and
maintain an atmosphere of challenging and supportive dialogue, increased
religious literacy, and spiritual guidance for all members of the Brown
community. Previously, Rev. Boswell-Ford was a chaplain for Bentley
University, and provided pastoral care and advisory support through
spiritually based, wellness-centered, and diversity-focused programs and
support systems for the university community. She is also ordained by
the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A.

Rev. Boswell-Ford will join the MIT community on July 10. She will
assume responsibilities from Acting Chaplain to the Institute John
Wuestneck, who has ably led Religious Life during the search. I also
want to thank the search committee for their dedication to the process.

I am delighted that Rev. Boswell-Ford will soon take on this important
role in our community. Please join me in congratulating her, and
welcoming her to MIT.

Best regards,
Suzy
