I was the visiting council member to the events committee last year. A few =
notes:
About last year's success, Macklemore was booked early and before his album=
went platinum and before he topped the billboard charts. The price for ar=
tists are set prices and are usually based on popularity, songs on the char=
ts and previous concert prices. In other words, we got incredibly lucky th=
at our campus caught onto "Thrift Shop" and "Same Love" before the rest of =
the world.
So if we wanted to repeat the success of last year, here are several possib=
le solutions:
1. Get lucky
2. Events staff develops and uses predictive models to find rising stars ba=
sed off campus/summer preferences, industry forecasts, etc...
3. Increase the budget.

One quick note regarding the budgets of other schools:
Northeastern has over 16,000 undergrads (24,000 total) and Ohio State has r=
oughly 45,000 undergraduates (60,000 total). It may be advantageous to fin=
d an example school that is actually close in size to MIT, such as Tufts (5=
,000 undergrads, 10,000 total), Yale (5,000/11,000), or Princeton (5000/750=
0) if you want to compare peer schools.

Appendix 1
Budgets of other schools: really big schools (e.g. Ohio State) have $5mill=
ion budget. They put on many events throughout the year, all/most of which=
are free to students. Smaller schools (e.g. Northeastern) put on fewer ev=
ents, but still have a larger budget (probably around the order of 200-300k=
)
Example Budget Breakdown: Every year, we will have to spend ~35k on produc=
tion cost and up to 10k for the agent fee. That leaves us <100k for the ar=
tists. Most schools will spend 100k on their headliner. Some examples of =
artists that cost quite a bit more than 100k (in October) are:
Passion Pit, Jason Mraz, Calvin Harris (250k), Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar,=
Arctic Monkeys, Diplo, Ke$ha, Krewella, MGMT (175k), Childish Gambino
What we could do with more money:
a) Get bigger and better artists
b) Get more artists (and do concerts throughout the weekend)
c) Make concert tickets cheaper/free
d) Subsidize student groups holding events during SpringFest
