Went back this past Saturday and again everything was great. We made reservations a month in advance and were seated quickly and even before our exact time. Service continues to be great, food continues to be great, the feeling is that everything about this place cares about your experience for all your senses. I am not often a 5 star guy but it has to be for this place.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee

It is no mistake that Selden Standard has been named the Detroit Free Press 2015 restaurant of the year. Long story short - the food is great. So, I want to concentrate my attention on the immaculate, outstanding, make-your-day service that I experienced.

I was in Midtown for a meeting that ended early and I decided on the spur of the moment to visit Selden Standard, which I'd been meaning to try for months. I arrived just as the bar opened at 4:30pm. Feeling a wee bit sheepish because I was alone, I asked if they could accommodate a single diner at 5pm. Not only could they accommodate me, the host assured, but since I was there alone, I should sit at the chef's counter so I could enjoy watching the meals being prepared. She also explained that patrons without reservations would be seated in the order they arrived, so by looking around me, I could deduce I would be seated in the 2nd handful of people. Nice to know.

I grabbed a spot at the bar to while away the half hour, and enjoyed a delicious craft cocktail called "The Burden of Speech"; a mixture of apple brandy, Michigan plum shrub (plum flavored drinking vinegar with simple syrup), amaretto, and lemon. YUM! I sat in the corner, happily engaged with my drink and my device, and neither the bartender nor the bar back nor anyone at all looked askance at my device-y-ness.

About five minutes before 5pm, the bartender asked if I would be remaining at the bar. Upon learning that I would be moving to the chef's counter, he cashed me out just in time for the host to seat me. She seated me one chair away from a much younger guy on my left, who also looked to be on his own, and on my right, she seated a man about my age, and also flying solo, right next to me (as I was soon to realize, this seating arrangement was no coincidence).

A couple minutes after seating me, the host came back up and, addressing me by my name, asked me if it was OK for her to put my forgotten-at-the-bar jacket on the back of the chair. Nice!

I was now in the capable hands of my server, Mikhail, who soon made it clear why I had been seated right next to the gentleman to my right.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
