There is one thing worse than what you described. Same scenario exactly except that you don't get to say that it just happened to you, because it was your fault. Entirely. And you don't get excuses about "2000 miles away" or anything like that. Just plain standard stupidity and incompetence. I like the last paragraph of entry 0001. It's very romantic in a sick, MIT sort of way...
