I wanted to alert everyone that the Red Cross is now reporting that
there is a blood emergency, which means there may not be enough for
those in need and patient care could be delayed.

Donors of all types are always needed, but donors with type O+, O-, A-,
or B- blood are especially needed, and should consider making a Power
Red (formerly Double Red) donation. For more information see:
http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/types-donations/double-red-blood-cells-donation

We are also looking for additional volunteers at next week's drive.
Volunteers help speed the process, and allow the Red Cross Staff to
focus on the actual blood collection. If you are willing to sign up you
can do so at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AQANNZJaFTkqkoCQAPwUdh5d-xhKmUKDRyDPQ7C-C-4/edit#gid=0

As always, you can make an appointment for MIT's drive at

Subject: Blood Drive at MIT...7/10 - 7/14

Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday 7/10
through Friday 7/14, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will
run from 1pm to 6pm every day except Tuesday, when it will run from 8am
to 1pm.

Make an appointment (for faster service): http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/

The Red Cross is offering an opportunity to complete the reading and
health questionnaire from the comfort of your home or office, which is
supposed to save you around 15 minutes at the drive itself. To do this,
visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass, but be aware of several
caveats: 1) this *must* be done the same day as your donation 2) It
cannot be done from a phone, a desktop/laptop is required 3) You will
need to be able to show a copy of your form (either emailed to yourself,
or printed) at the drive 4) MIT's drives are located in zip code 02139

Hello,

Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who made the extra effort
to donate at our April drive. Each one of you may have helped as many
as three people with your donation.

There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday 7/10
through Friday 7/14, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will
run from 1pm to 6pm every day except Tuesday, when it will run from 8am
to 1pm.

Please use http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an appointment
for faster service.

As is often the case over the summer, there is an urgent need for blood
donations. There are a couple of reasons this is a regular summer
problem. First, there are more people injured in various outdoor
activities over the summer. Second, at least in our area, many
donations come from high schools and colleges, which either aren't in
session, or have much smaller student populations, over the summer.
Please take this opportunity to save a life by donating blood.

The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To make
an appointment, fill out the form at:

	http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/

If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.

We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.

Blood Donation Factoids:

  * Drink extra fluids before your donation. You can begin to drink extra
fluids the day before your donation. Water and juices are great, but
try to avoid a lot of caffeine.

  * An adult open-heart surgery patient, on average, will need two to
six units of red blood cells, two to four units of plasma and one
to 10 units of platelets (or one to two units of apheresis
    platelets).

If you want to forward this message, feel free as long as you are
sending it to a friend, or to a list for which it is appropriate. In
other words, feel free to forward, but please don't spam people on our
behalf. If anyone wants to get on our mailing list they can check the
appropriate box when making an appointment, or fill out the form at
