Hello,

Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who took the time to
donate or volunteer at our May drive. Unfortunately we were only able
to collect 177 units of blood. On behalf of the Red Cross, thank you
for saving lives, but need to better this month, especially since demand
goes up over the summer.

There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday 7/14 through Friday 7/18,

As noted above, demand for blood goes up over the summer, as more people
are active and outdoors and more injuries occur. In addition, at least
in our area, supply goes down over the summer. Much of the blood
donated in the Boston area comes from drives run at various schools
(both colleges and high schools), and with so many students away we all
have to come together to make up the difference.

The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To make
an appointment, fill out the form at:

	http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/

If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.

We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.

Blood Donation Factoids:

  * Pre-hydrating can make your donation process easier (particularly in
the hot weather we're having). Please consider drinking extra water
and juice during the 24 hours before your donation, but avoid extra
caffeine which can actually dehydrate you.

  * A liver transplant patient, on average, will need six to 10 units
of red blood cells, 20 units of plasma and 10 units of platelets
(or one to two units of apheresis platelets).

If you want to forward this message, feel free as long as you are
sending it to a friend, or to a list for which it is appropriate. In
other words, feel free to forward, but please don't spam people on our
behalf. If anyone wants to get on our mailing list they can check the
appropriate box when making an appointment, or fill out the form at
