I posted this story to the mailing list on Dec. 31, 1999 (yes, on the
eve of the pseudo-millenium!). It's a well-known story called "Not
the Wind, Not the Flag" from the Mumonken (a famous collection of Zen
stories). Reposting since it's been a while. (The only change I made
in 12 years is {lutu'} to {lubej} in the first sentence.)
SuSmo' joqtaH joqwI' 'e' lubej ghojmoHwI' cha' ghojwI'Daj je.
jatlh ghojwI' wa'DIch: <vIHtaH joqwI'.>
jatlh ghojwI' cha'DIch: <ghobe'. vIHtaH SuS.>
jatlhchu' ghojmoHwI': <Sulughbe'. vIHtaH yabraj'e'.>
A master and his two disciples observe a flag flapping in the wind.
The first disciple says: "The flag is moving."
The second disciple says: "No. The wind is moving."
The master says: "(Both of) you are wrong. It is your minds which are moving."
