Subject: LILO version 22.3.3 released
Date: 8 Sep 2002 01:25:48 GMT
Reply-To: Read@MY.fullname.FOR.reply.TO

LILO release 22.3.3 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.

Version 22.3.3 is a minor update to version 22.3.2

o Add EVMS support patch (see CHANGES)
o Re-work UNSAFE keyword for hard drives
o Minor bugs fixed: -p flag, 256 heads

Version 22.3.2 is a minor bugfix to version 22.3.1.

o Correct usage of LBA32 in 'mbr.S' (lilo -M ...)

Version 22.3.1 is a minor update to version 22.3.

o Change-rule bugfix in chain loader
o Cosmetic changes to 'lilo -T ebda' output
o Source distribution support for booting arbitrary binaries (pseudo.b)

Version 22.3 is a major update to version 22.2.

o The distribution consists of /sbin/lilo ONLY; all *.b files are
   incorporated within this file (builtin).
o A bitmap file header editor is incorporated (-E flag).
o The map file unifies the second stage, chain, message file, and bitmap
   files.
o -E, -F, and -B flags are added (see man pages).
o Chain loader will now pass a command line to a second LILO installation.
o Boot protocol 0203h is now supported. "large-memory" option added to
force initial ramdisk loading to highest memory.
o "vga=" on command line allows any radix input.

Versions 22.2, 22.1, 22.0 are major updates to version 21.

o LVM support is added.
o Password CRC-32 polynomials are superceded by 160-bit SHS digests,
   which are cryptographically secure.
o RAID1 codes are updated to fix a problem encountered on skewed raid
   installations in booting "other=" sections.
o Compilation option allows for specification of more kernels.
o A graphical user interface using VGA 640x480x16 (mode 0x12) is added.
o Secure passwords are implemented using four CRC-32 polynomials.
o RAID1 codes are completely re-written, and correctly implement 'lock',
   'fallback', and "lilo -R ..."

THE NEW RAID1 IMPLEMENTATION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH VERSION 21.

Those using version 21 should read 'README.raid1' before installing these
new codes. There is a compatibility mode (lilo -x mbr-only) for existing
RAID1 installations which are not going to be converted to the Version 22
implementation.

Source code is available for download from:

  http://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo (developer's site)
   ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo

Or from the main distribution site:

   ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo (please use)

See the distribution file 'CHANGES' for details of the differences between
22.3.3 and prior releases.

Subject: serialphoto - command line utils for kodak dc240 digital cameras
Date: 8 Sep 2002 01:25:55 GMT

serialphoto triggers a kodak digital camera for getting regular snapshots.

Ever dreamed of simply pluging your digital camera on your linux laptop and :
# ask it to regularly shoot one picture every 30 seconds ?
# and to download and erase automatically those pictures on the fly ??

Ever dreamed of simply pluging your digital camera on your linux and :
# getting quickly its whole content, at once ?
# with decent file-names ??
# including time-stamps from the exact moment when the stills were shot ???

dumpdc240 is derivated from gphoto, but simply much lighter, it's a
command-line util that performs what you always need in a rush : safely
dumping the content of the camera, with good filenames before you manually
erase the whole content of the flash card, you're now ready to catch your
train and take pictures as much as you want, instead of wondering if you
want to keep this or that picture.

all those utils are gpl

InterSystems, Agility, J.P. Morgan Chase Career Center
to Provide Free IT Training for Displaced Financial Workers

CACHÉ Database Classes Offered Sept. 9-13
______________________________________________________________________

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— September 4, 2002—InterSystems Corporation today
announced a training agreement with Agility Investment Technologies,
providing free career assistance to IT workers in New York's financial
services industry who were displaced by the events of September 11,
2001. According to research compiled by the United Way of New York City,
between 90,000 and 150,000 of the area's workers lost their jobs in the
past year as a result of the attacks on the World Trade Center – a
center of activity for the financial services sector.

Starting September 9, the J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Career Center will
host a five-day training course on InterSystems CACHÉ high-performance
database. The course enables the career center's clients to develop new
programming skills, making them more attractive prospects for hiring.
Although the program is valued at $1695 per person, trainees will pay
nothing to gain knowledge of programming with CACHÉ, a growing,
increasingly visible database technology in the financial services
sector.

"All of us have been profoundly affected by the tragic events in New
York City one year ago," says Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems vice
president of strategic planning. "This program is our attempt to show
members of the city's financial community how much we appreciate what
they've done for us in the past. We recognize that New York has always
been an important base of support for our technology, and we want to
help these workers be productive again."

"It’s our goal to help our clients gain the skills needed to be
redeployed into the workforce," says David Rottman, vice president of
J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Career Center. "I believe this training program
will boost our clients’ chances of employment and give them a
competitive advantage."

"The gauntlet is now thrown down to other companies to demonstrate their
commitment to helping America get back to work," says Ellen Shepard,
chief operating officer, Agility Investment Technologies. "We would like
to see other companies meet the challenge and help the economy bounce
back."

CACHÉ is an object-oriented, post-relational database management system
in use at such innovative financial services companies as Ameritrade,
J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and FORUM Solutions. The world’s leading
database provider in healthcare and recognized as a database technology
innovator in transaction processing, InterSystems delivers high
performance, highly scalable database products for Web and client/server
applications.

The USC-LUG, SCLUG, and UCLALUG are proud to present the first annual
Southern California Linux Expo. Scheduled for November 2nd, 2002 at the
Davidson Conference Center on the University of Southern California campus,
the Southern California Linux Expo will bring together Linux and Open Source
software companies, developers, and users.

Interested in Linux? Want to know what Linux is? Want to see what cool stuff
Linux is capable of? Want to meet other people from the Linux User
community?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then come to the Southern
California Linux Expo November 2, 2002 at the beautiful USC Davidson
Conference Center

We will be charging for this event in order to cover the expenses associated
with organizing it, not to make a profit. Our goal is for attendees to gain
new insight and excitement about our growing technological community.

The first large scale professional Linux expo in Los Angeles is being held
by Linux users groups from the local area: the USC-LUG, SCLUG, and UCLALUG.
The three LUGs combine their efforts to expand on previous LUG Fests and
bring forward an exposition to promote Linux and the Free Software
community.

RHODES: is a cosmopolitan resort in the south Aegean
Archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, where Europe
meets the Orient and is the third largest of the Greek
islands. Combining Europe with Orient and nearly the whole
year favored by the God of Sun "Helios", it is a real experience
to discover. The old Town of Rhodes is the largest inhabited walled
medieval city in Europe and included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.
It is called island of Sun, (the most sunniest place in Europe).
It is called island of Knights, (see the History of the Island below).
It is called island of Roses ("rhode" means rose in greek).
It is called island of Butterflies (because of the famous - unique in the
world - valley of butterflies).
It is called island of the seven springs (because of the famous valley of
the seven springs).
