Subject: LilyPond 1.6.0 - Print music beautifully
Date: 20 Aug 2002 16:40:04 GMT

WHAT IS LilyPond?

LilyPond is the GNU Project music typesetter. LilyPond produces
beautiful sheet music using a description file as input. Documentation
and examples can be found on

        http://www.lilypond.org/

This release is focused on improved output quality: some pieces of
output now have publication quality. To achieve this, we have
completely overhauled the spacing engine, the font and the beaming
code.

Version 1.6 also adds support for drum notation, figured bass,
tablature and (limited) ancient notation, piano notation.

NEW SINCE 1.4

* Support for figured bass and tablature.

* Completely rewritten beam formatting: provides much better output
now.

* Completely revised and improved music font.

* Completely rewritten MIDI import support.

* Completely rewritten grace note support. Practically speaking this means
that grace notes can be slurred to normal normal notes.

* Improved accidental handling and formatting: styles for producing
cautionaries may vary, and complex collisions between accidentals of a
chord are handled much better.

* Better spacing: both globally and locally. This includes subtle
details like optical stem spacing.

* More support for ancient notation: mensural ligatures, ambitus
(pitch range) of voices, more shapes, etc.

* More support for piano notation: bracket pedals, directed arpeggios,
arpeggio brackets.

* Easier music polyphonic music entry.

* More extensibility, many speedups and bugfixes

* The manual has been thoroughly revised.

* Development is now hosted at http://savannah.gnu.org, and sources
can be downloaded through anonymous CVS.

* Support for windows: LilyPond is part of the cygwin distribution,
which comes with a user-friendly installer.

From: Sebastien Godard <sebastien.godard@wanadoo.fr>
Subject: sysstat-4.0.6 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: 20 Aug 2002 16:40:11 GMT

Hi all,

This is to announce that sysstat 4.0.6 is now available on ibiblio's
Linux archive site (formerly known as Metalab):

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
101kB  sysstat-4.0.6.tar.gz
104kB  sysstat-4.0.6-1.src.rpm
65kB   sysstat-4.0.6-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

sysstat 4.0.6 is a *stable* version, which is fully compatible with
Linux 2.4 kernels.

To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

Changes vs 4.0.5 are:
2002/08/04: _Version 4.0.6
* mpstat now uses a bitmap of char instead of int to avoid endianness
problems. As a consequence, mpstat should now work on PowerMac
architectures.
* CPU activity as displayed by mpstat -P for a given processor was in
a wrong range on SMP machines (eg. 0-50% for a dual processor box).
* Missing bitmap initialization fixed in mpstat.c.
* Configuration script updated.
* FAQ upated.

Enjoy!

From: Russell Marks <russell.marks@ntlworld.com>
Subject: nomarch 1.3 - extract `.arc' files
Date: 20 Aug 2002 16:35:05 GMT

nomarch lists/extracts/tests `.arc' archives. (It also handles `.ark'
files, they're exactly the same.) This is a *very* outdated file
format which should never be used for anything new, but unfortunately,
you can still run into it every so often (especially if you mess about
with old CP/M stuff). So nomarch is handy as a way to deal with these
files.

(nomarch is primarily intended as a `replacement' for the non-Free
`arc' program.)

You can download it from ibiblio:

  ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/utils/compress/nomarch-1.3.tar.gz

There's also a web page here:

  http://rus.members.beeb.net/nomarch.html

Changes in version 1.3:

Added compression methods 5 and 6, which seem to be along the same
lines as v1.0 of the CP/M `crunch' scheme (so I was able to adapt some
code from lbrate). This isn't very well tested though - all I know is
that it works on the single method-6 test file I have - so if anyone
has any more files using these methods they can test it on (use
`nomarch -lv' to check the methods used by a file) I'd appreciate
feedback on whether it works or not. :-)

Self-extracting archives (for both MS-DOS and CP/M) can be read. (It
doesn't support those produced with pkpak, but even pkunpak can't read
those.)

Now supports the Acorn Archimedes's variant "Spark" format (including
the extra compression method), which is based on the more usual .arc.
Any `subdirectories' are extracted as the .arc files they really are.

main.c now uses unistd.h rather than getopt.h, which was troublesome
on some systems. Thanks to Geoff Gibbs for spotting this.

We Want Linux, a self-funded non-commercial group of IT professionals,
would like to see the computing consumer have as many options in the
marketplace as possible, and so we'd like to see those who have an
interest in GNU/Linux be able to try out a demo machine in stores like
CompUSA and Best Buy, the same way they can right now with Windows. We
also feel the potential Linux desktop user ought to have the same
opportunity as those who use Windows, that is, to buy a computer with
Linux pre-loaded and thereby avoid the hassle of installing an
operating system. To these ends we've created a web site

http://www.wewantlinux.org/

for the purpose of surveying the computer-buying public and
determining how much demand there is for off-the-shelf computers with
GNU/Linux pre-loaded. We invite you to visit the site and participate
in the survey. Once we've gathered a significant amount of survey
data, we intend to present our findings to the retailers in the hope
of persuading them to demo Linux in their stores.

ObeliX ./. MobiliX: The Gauls want a second round in court

Though Obelix has lost the charge against the trademark
<a href="http://mobilix.org">MobiliX</a>,
the Gauls want a second round in court. Even before the end of the
appelation time "Lés Editions Albert René" has appealed against
the decision of the German court. To deliver detailed arguments
their lawyers now have time until 26th September.
The charge about 250.000 USD was accusing
<a href="http://mobilix.org">MobiliX</a> of using
a name which might be mistaken for Obelix. And therefore abusing
the good reputation of Obelix. But during the first round
in the court at Munich these arguments were rejected by the judges.
The judges argued that the trademark MobiliX is built from
the word "Mobil" and the abbrevation "iX". This abbrevation
is a very common description for UniX projects. But this didn't
impress the plaintiff, they are continuing their way through
the courts and they are already charging other German Linux
projects. At <a href="http://mobilix.org">MobiliX</a> many
informations about BSD, Linux and other UniXes on laptops,
PDAs, cell phones and other mobile computers are available.
The documentation of the case is available
<a href="http://mobilix.org/mobilix_asterix.html">online</a>.

Subject: Synergy 0.9.8 - cross platform mouse/keyboard/clipboard sharing
Date: 20 Aug 2002 16:35:19 GMT

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between
multiple computers with different operating systems without special
hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their
desk since each system uses its own monitor(s). Just move the mouse
off the edge of a screen to move to another screen; keyboard and
mouse input is then redirected to the other screen. Synergy also
lets you cut and paste between systems and it makes screen savers
activate/deactivate in concert.

This is the initial public release. This release supports:
* Linux, Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP;
* any number of connected screens;
* a 3 button mouse with wheel;
* ASCII keyboards;
* Unicode text clipboard transfer;
* screensaver synchronization.

Subject: The Gauls against Tux
Date: 20 Aug 2002 16:35:22 GMT
Reply-To: Werner Heuser <wehe@mobilix.org>

The Gauls don't give up, Les Éditions Albert René finally hasn't only
charged MobiliX - Unix on Mobile Devices, but at least
two other German Linux companies. Since
August 12th the owner of the domain masterix.de has got a charge.
Unknown from the public the Skroblin GmbH owner of skrobelix.de
was charged some time ago. All three projects do work related to
Linux.

The owners of Skrobelix and Masterix probably don't want to take the
risk of loosing in court, since their opponent is a million-dollar
company. On their webpages they are announcing to withdraw their
domains. Werner Heuser, owner of the trademark MobiliX, fights
back in court. In the first court he has won already, but since
August 12th the court has received an appelation. If the trademark
trouble continues trough every of the three possible courts,
there will be approximately 60.000 USD fees for lawyers and
courts, the charge itself is up to 250.000 USD.

The documentation of the case is
<a href="http://mobilix.org/mobilix_asterix.html">available online</a>.
It contains more than 500 projects ending on "iX". Now the
question is, when will Les Éditions Albert René also charge the
owners of the trademark UniX?

Amberfish is new open source text retrieval software featuring:

* XML document searching (semi-structured text)
* Structured queries (arbitrary containment) for nested
  fields/documents
* Hierarchical result sets (for XML)
* Searching across multiple databases, allowing modular indexing
* Efficient indexing with little available memory
* Full text and field searching
* Boolean queries
* Right truncation (prefix terms)
* Phrase searching
* Relevance ranking
* Multiple documents per file
* UNIX-friendly administrative tools for integration

Amberfish is made available by Etymon Systems, Inc. under the terms of
version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Subject: Linux CD`s for sale - £2.50 per CD or less, including first class postage and packing to anywhere in the UK
Date: 20 Aug 2002 16:35:29 GMT

I`m selling copies of Linux CD`s in the UK for £2.50 per CD or less,
depending on
how many you order. As an example, I charge £6.75 for Mandrake 8.2,
including delivery by first class post. I will also discuss pricing for
large orders - email me if you want to order a lot of CD`s and we`ll come to
a deal.

I take payment by NoChex, cheque or postal order. For international orders,
please email me to confirm postage costs - I can also accept PayPal
payments or if this isn`t possible we can come to an arrangement. Cash in
Euro`s is OK, as are Amazon.co.uk gift certificates :-)

For full details of what distributions I am selling, along with a full price
list and details on how to pay, visit my site:

If this posting is against the newsgroup charter, please email me off the
group and I`ll make sure I don`t post here again.

Thank you for your time.
