From: "Alexander V. Lukyanov" <lav@yars.free.net>
Subject: lftp-2.6.0 - reliable command line driven ftp client
Date: 12 Aug 2002 23:10:11 GMT

This is announcement of a new major version of LFTP.

News since last version (2.5.4):
* separated rate limitations for download and upload (set limit-rate 200:100).
* added SSL certificate support and several SSL related settings.
* connection slot support. Now you can switch sessions with Meta-[123...]
or with command `slot <name>'. You can also use slot:<name> as a pseudo-URL.
* per-slot queues. Now you can have several queues for the same site using
  different slots.
* queue can be stopped now. Use `queue' with no args to create a stopped
queue, `queue start' to run it, `queue stop' to stop it. When you exit lftp,
  the queue will start automatically.
* mirror now appends source base name to target if target ends with a slash.
* improved hftp:proxy setting. Now it defaults to http:proxy and is not
needed if ftp:proxy is set to `http://...'.
* fixed mirror in case of server without MDTM command (Glenn Maynard).
* mirror could start multiple transfers if it could not cd to a direcory,
even without --parallel (test case by Glenn Maynard).
* fixed fd leak in `(commands)' structure (Glenn Maynard).
* fixed memory leak in '(commands)'.

From: Martin Pool <mbp@sourcefrog.net>
Subject: distcc: A free, simple, efficient distributed C/C++ compiler
Date: 12 Aug 2002 23:10:17 GMT

distcc is a program to distribute compilation of C or C++ code across
several machines on a network. distcc should always generate the same
results as a local compile, is simple to install and use, and is often
significantly faster than a local compile.

Unlike other distributed build systems, distcc does not require all
machines to share a filesystem, have synchronized clocks, or to have
the same libraries or header files installed. Machines can be running
different operating systems, as long as they have compatible binary
formats or cross-compilers.

Version 0.7 is a beta release that succesfully and reliably builds
projects such as GNOME, KDE, the Linux kernel, Samba and gcc several times
faster than local compilation.

distcc can be downloaded from

Stallman is right, though, we aren't talking about freedom enough. Do
people really spend their weekends helping annoying new people install
free software because it has a more efficient development methodology?
Of course not. If it were only about efficiency, hobbyists would
volunteer to replace the old ballasts in companies' fluorescent
lights.

Subject: [ANNOUNCE] SMSTerm 0.5
Date: 12 Aug 2002 23:10:21 GMT

SMSTerm version 0.5 has been released!

SMSTerm is an application which allows you to communicate with your
computer thru SMS from anywhere. It uses the ICQ2000 protocol to
send/recieve SMS'es.

It launches a shell on a pty, and serves as a bridge between a GSM
mobile phone, and your computer. All data sent to it is sent unaltered
to the spawned shell, and all the output from the shell is sent to the
GSM mobile phone. Its useful for performing some remote administration
systems, especially from areas, where you don't have a connection to
the Internet. It also comes with a command line SMS sender.

Changes:

- SMSTerm 0.5 comes with a small daemon which can be used to send SMS's
from the command line or any scripts, again through ICQ. The
daemon is there for allowing multiple instances of
icqsms-send.pl to be started with only one ICQ connection
        active.

- Send Initialisation SMS to a pre-determined mobile phone since
ICQ no longer has a standard GSM number allocated to a
particular ICQ UIN. All further communication has to be done
only by replying to the number received in the initialisation
        SMS from SMSTerm.

Subject: LessTif Release 0.93.36 is out
Date: 12 Aug 2002 23:10:35 GMT

The LessTif Core Team is pleased to announce
      Release 0.93.36
of the LessTif library!

This is an intermediate release:
- it contains many XmText bugfixes, including one that broke 0.93.34 badly
- several other miscellaneous fixes

About LessTif:
LessTif is a "free" (LGPL'd) implementation of the OSF/Motif standard
GUI toolkit for X11. LessTif aims to be source compatible with the Motif
(a product of The OpenGroup) versions 1.2 and 2.1.

So at this point, nearly all Motif 1.2 apps compile and work out of the box
with LessTif! We still lack substantial parts of the new 2.1 functionality,
but most 2.x applications can already be built, and used (many don't use
the 2.x novelties).

Some run-time problems however may still exist. The LessTif Core team is
interested in hearing about Motif applications which don't work with LessTif.
Bug reports are welcome - patches are even more welcome!

More information, source code, and binaries for several platforms
are available at:

        http://www.lesstif.org
        http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/lesstif

Subject: [Announcement] GLLUG - The Greater London Linux User Group (UK) - Meeting - 14th September
Date: 12 Aug 2002 23:10:58 GMT

That is right, your eyes do not deceive you, The Greater London Linux User
Group is, at long last, going to have another meeting.

The date for your diaries is Saturday 14th September 2002, 12noon until 5pm.
Doubtless to say, there will also be a session in some pub afterwards,
should you not be able to make it during the day.

We will be meeting in the New Cavendish Street campus of Westminster
University, this is in the shadow of the BT Tower, nearest tube stations
are Great Portland Street and Goodge Street. You will find a map at [
http://www.wmin.ac.uk/static/maps.asp ]

For this meeting, and all the future meetings, we have the use of the
Universities 'large' lecture theatre, the network lab and the
Multimedia lab.

The large lecture theatre -
Hopefully you will appreciate the use of this larger lecture theatre. For
those that went last time, your comments and criticisms were justified
about the smaller theatre being too small. We are still finalising the
details of the talks, so these will be posted to the web site soon,
<http://gllug.linux.co.uk>.

The network lab -
We will use the network lab, this month, for rolling demo installations.

The multimedia room -
This will be used as a chat area, away from the lectures.
There are monitors, desks and power, so people are welcome to set up their
own equipment here if they want.
Hopefully we will have some BoaF groups form here.

********************************************

The GLLUG website, you remember - it's at http://gllug.linux.co.uk, has had
a revamp. Do make sure you have a look, pass on your comments.

********************************************

The meeting after the next meet is booked for the 19th October 2002

From: schulz@informatik.tu-muenchen.de (Stephan Schulz)
Subject: E Equational Theorem Prover 0.7 "Dhajea" released
Date: 12 Aug 2002 23:11:02 GMT

The E equational theorem prover version 0.7 "Dhajea" has been
released.

E is a a purely equational theorem prover for clausal logic with
equality. Thus, you can specify a mathematical problem (e.g. a
mathematical puzzle), a (small) piece of program code or some hardware
elements in clausal logic (using rules of the form "If A and B and C
then D or E or F" in a PROLOG-like syntax), and try to have the system
prove certain properties of the described structure. Be warned that
this can consume inane (in fact, theoretically unlimited) amounts of
CPU time and memory for difficult problems.

E 0.7 has been carefully tested on all CNF problems of the TPTP
problem library, version 2.4.1, and showed no unexpected
behaviour. The prover can produce checkable proof objects, a simple
proof checker is included in the distribution.

Important changes are a much simplified rewrite engine, direct PCL2
support, a better automatic mode, and better memory control
features. In automatic mode, this version should behave exactly like
the prerelase version that participated in CASC-18. To achieve this,
we have refrained from including a couple of more recent
improvements. They will be included in E 0.71, due out in some weeks.

E is available as a source distribution for UNIX-variants. It installs
cleanly under all UNIX variants I could get my hands on: Various
versions of GNU/Linux for Intel and SPARC, SunOS (with tweaking),
Solaris and HPUX.

The system is distributed under the GNU General Public License.

You can find the source distribution and additional information at
http://wwwjessen.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~schulz/WORK/eprover.html
Our servers are usually rebooted Monday mornings between 3:30 and 4:00
CET, and may be unavailable during this time.

Have fun!
