I just finished my in.fingerd replacement. It's called kfingerd and
it adds several additional features to remote fingers. Versions 0.01 and
0.02 are nearly identical.
First, it gives users control over what information about them is
released over the net. They can also adjust what to release based upon where
they are being fingered from or password protect it. (Give your friends a
password so they can see when you last read mail, but the general public
cannot, for example.)
Second, it allows users to have multiple plan files. What plan file
is output can be based upon the originating host and/or a 'subname'. If the
name fingered contains a '#', everything after the '#' is considered a
subname. So, if your username is "joo@foo.bar", you can have one 'plan' file
for "joo@foo.bar" and one for "joo#projects@foo.bar" or
"joo#pgpkey@foo.bar".
Third, it allows users to selectively log their finger requests.
Logs include what subname was referenced (if any) and what host the finger
originated from.
Fourth, it allows finger output to come from a program. The program
is passed the originating host and subname (if any). This allows users to
use finger to initiate actions (such as mailing a file or appending some
information to a file), for example.
Fifth, it allows system administrators to easily create finger-only
pseudo-accounts that provide information upon a finger. These accounts can
also make use of subnames. (For example, "finger trouble@foo.com" could
provide information about problems, "finger trouble#mail@foo.com" could
provide information about mail problems.
And, of course, it also does much, much, more. It's PRE-BETA so
there may still be a few bugs, but I believe it's secure. The md5sum for
version 0.02 is:

I encourage you to download a copy of this blurb and put it in the
same directory as kfingerd. Then type: "md5sum -c < blurb". If you see
nothing, you have received an unmodified version of kfingerd-0.02 (unless
someone tampered with this blurb or your version of md5sum). If you see "MD5
check failed", please notify me _immediately_ and do _not_ use the program!
If you download any version of kfingerd other than 0.02, this check will
fail.
