There have been several different "magic filters" -- automatic printer
filters -- available for use with Linux. Unfortunately, most of them
seem to have a limited number of data and/or printer types hard-coded
in. This one is a development of a magic filter I wrote nearly two
years ago for local use, which was preconfigured at compile time. It
has been extended to support configuration files, which can easily be
extended to support any data type you have a converter for and know
how to identify. It even supports emailing nastygrams to users who
try to print things like executables and tar files. :-)
Sample configurations for HP LaserJet 4 series and HP DeskJet 550C are
included; converting this to the printer of your choice should be
quite simple.
