[ file(1) is a program used to determine the file type of files.
  magic(5) is the database of file type information that file uses. ]

I've compiled some additions and corrections to the magic information
that comes with the file(1) program as available on tesla.ee.cornell.edu
in /pub/file-3.14.tar.gz. It adds recognition of QMAGIC binaries, LILO
disk images, groff source and output, Emacs files, TeX data, and lots of
other stuff.

The patch (and the original tar file) is available on sunsite.unc.edu
in /pub/Linux/Incoming. I expect that it will eventually be moved to
/pub/Linux/system/Misc or something like that.

Note: I will not be releasing a "new version" of file--just patches to
the current version from tesla.ee.cornell.edu. This is version "b" of
the Linux file patches.

Here is a list of what's additions to magic(5) are in the patch as well
as who did what. My apologies if I left anyone out.

   * Mitchum DSouza (m.dsouza@mrc-apu.cam.ac.uk):
   additions: Linux locale message catalogs

   * Peter Tobias (tobias@server.et-inf.fho-emden.de):
   fixes/cleanup: linux, zoo
   additions: Linux TeX, Bash, Debian binary packages

   * Daniel Quinlan (quinlan@yggdrasil.com):
   fixes/cleanup: linux, zoo, audio, commands, ditroff, postscript, tex
   additions: c++, groff, PostScript Type 1 fonts, HTML document text,
   flex, lex description, LILO boot/chain loaders, Scheme/Lisp,
   byte-compiled Emacs-Lisp, PCL (HP printer format), TeX documents,
   Texinfo, GNU Info, timezone data, X11 fonts, PSF fonts, and X11
   Speedo fonts.
